BRANDON BANKS SELF (FT. MEEREBA)

Californian singer songwriter Brandon Banks has just dropped a soul-inflected pop song titled 'SELF', featuring L.A-based vocalist Mereba. 'SELF' is the artist's third single since his smooth debut album Tides. Lush 7th chords open the new single, with affected ad-lib vocals which back a catchy lead melody, creating a mood similar to 'Nights' or 'Pink and White' from Frank Ocean's album Blonde. Bank's spoken verse drops in with the beat, explaining "She was an angel draped in platinum and gold, Supple as a string in tune to speak to your soul". This line paints such an enchanting image that speaks for itself. He goes on with some sound, heart-warming philosophy... "But any path is righteous if you following dreams (yourself), Not to be the tallest but the root of the tree", reminding us of the power of modesty and groundedness. Mereba's verse is tuneful and immersive, narrating a story of self-discovery. On writing the song, Banks says he "Wrote this one while reflecting on this life and where we get the answers from". -Ellie Rose-Davies
